Giovanni (John) Michieli
December 9, 1960 - March 1, 2023

It is with immense sadness that we have to announce the tragic passing of John Michieli. Surrounded by his loving family, we are comforted in knowing he is no longer in pain.

John was born on December 9, 1960 in Fort William, Ontario. John was the first born to a large extended family, who cherished his arrival and where he could do no wrong in their eyes. After attending post-secondary school, John began his career in hospitality working at the family business, The Sleeping Giant Hotel. John then went onto working for ACZ Construction, Nadin’s Contracting, and then starting his own business, Michieli Equipment Rentals.

John always enjoyed finding a good deal, cars, auctions, snowmobiling with friends and weekly crib games with the guys in the sunroom. Above all else, John’s true love was for his two children.

In 2010, John suffered a severe stroke that changed the course of his life. John was able to overcome this and move forward with a positive, encouraging attitude. John made it his life mission to empower and mentor others in their personal journeys of recovery. John’s ultimate goal was to get himself back to work.

Survived by his mother Lina, wife Julie (Trakalo), son Maximilian, daughter Molly, brother Mario (Lorraine), niece Gabriella and nephew Nicholas, sister Marisa (Mike) Kubinec, nephew Ethan and niece Kayla, brother-in-law Danny Trakalo (Tina Travolo), nephew Steven, sister-in-law Michelle (Aaron) Perzan, nephews Daniel, David and Dylan. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in Thunder Bay, Italy and France.

Predeceased by his father Ferruccio Michieli, his grandparents Maria and Giovanni Michieli and Antonio and Adelaide Danelon, brother-in-law Steven Trakalo, father-in-law Elmer Trakalo, mother-in-law Gemma Trakalo, and various aunts, uncles and cousins in Thunder Bay and Italy.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at the Canada Games Complex, First Responders, P.R. Cook Apartments, the TBRHSC ER and ICU, and a special thanks to ICU nurse Krista and Brian from BISNO.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Services. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 8, 2023 at 10 am at Corpus Christi Church on Red River Road. Visitation will be held one hour before the service for friends and family.
